Greek Yogurt Bagel Donuts with Cream Cheese Filling [egg free and nut free]

Greek yogurt bagel donuts with cream cheese filling has a cinnamon flavored dough rolled in an additional mixture of buttery cinnamon sugar. They are sweet, bagel-y, donut-y, treat with a tangy cream cheese filling!

I’m confused, what is it exactly?

Imagine a cinnamon bagel rolled into a ball. But this bagel ball is covered in a sweet and woodsy cinnamon sugar topping just like the donuts at the fairs and local stores are like. THEN when you bite into the center, it is a creamy, tangy filling of cream cheese.

Is it a cinnamon sugar bagel?

Or… a cinnamon sugar donut?

It is really both!

A Bagnut? Dogel? None of those really sound right.

I took the best of both worlds and kept it healthy, or you know something like a healthy Greek yogurt dessert, using a high protein ingredient like yogurt and of course plain cream cheese.

In this recipe I used a 0% plain greek yogurt. Feel free to change it up with a higher fat percentage if you prefer. It can only get more delicious.

What do they taste like?

The dough is more reminiscent of a bagel dough, and the interior pocket of cream cheese really drives home the overall breakfast and bagel appeal.

However, the dough is enriched with ground cinnamon, brown sugar and granulated sugar. Kind of like a cinnamon raisin bagel without the raisins. The outside of this Greek yogurt dough dessert can be as sweet as you like with the additional cinnamon-sugar buttery mixture. Another optional topping is a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Arguably, these could be a sweet breakfast option. Or an amazing midday snack. However you want to eat them and whenever you want to eat them is your business. I am not here to judge.

Do I really need to use self-rising flour?

Yes! This recipe would not work with regular flour alone. You would need to add baking powder and salt- according to the Food Network. I have not tried this recipe making my own self rising flour so keep that in mind if you choose to go this route.

Otherwise just buy a bag of self rising flour, and you can try out my other recipes using self rising flour such as these 3 ingredient bagels, and chocolate chip scones.

An eggless breakfast option (or eggless dessert option!)

This recipe is naturally egg free and nut free, but always double check your ingredients and labels. I have not tried it with a vegan yogurt or cream cheese yet, but if you do let me know the results! This recipe is packed with dairy which can be great for all you dairy lovers, and it will keep you fuller longer. However, because it uses so many dairy elements, I am not sure if ingredient ratios would be altered to make it dairy free.

Storage

Since these are loaded with cream cheese, you will need to refrigerate them after about 1-2 hours at room temperature. They reheat extremely well in the microwave or toaster oven. They also make a great option to put in school lunches.
