Grinch Kabobs, An Easy Healthy Holiday Snack

Sweet green grapes, a strawberry and a banana come together in the cutest little holiday snack. Top with an optional marshmallow and delight in how amazing your kids think these are! The holidays can be a particularly challenging time of year for people with food allergies. I want to be able to help those by recreating snacks and treats, and inspire a variety of foods that can be transformed from not-safe to food allergy friendly. These special little treats are just that. They have been around for ages, so in that regard I canā€™t take specific credit for them. However, I can recognize that we all need an easy healthy holiday snack, that makes accommodations for people with allergies to fruits too. In the spirit of the holidays, I’ve come up with a list of options so hopefully anyone can enjoy these!

The best part of this recipe is its versatility; they can be created numerous ways with different fruits, vegetables, or cheeses. Itā€™s kind of like a kid charcuterie board but on a stick. These alternative options are for people who may not be able to eat the certain fruits on the original Grinch kabobs. OR maybe you canā€™t find the right ingredients at the store (have yā€™all seen these sad looking strawberries lately?) Or maybe you just want to try something new. Here are the options to switch out the original fruits on the kabobs.

Green Grape alternative- cucumber, kiwi, pear, avocado, honey dew melon, green apple

Banana alternative- coconut, dragon fruit, slice of mozzarella cheese, pear, apple, white strawberry

Strawberry alternative- raspberry, red plum slice, blood orange slice cut in half, watermelon, cherry

The process is a breeze, and it thrills the kids to no end. Our allergy kids deserve all the great snacks that everyone else gets šŸ˜‰

How to achieve this easy healthy holiday snack that resembles the Grinch(!)

Preparation: wash and dry the strawberries and grapes. Slice the banana thinly. Set aside.

Cut the tops off the strawberries šŸ“ to resemble a hat or alternatively cut a red fruit in the shape of a triangle to achieve this effect.

Slice the grapes in half lengthwise (top to bottom), as whole grapes are a choking hazard- not just for kids, for everyone. I take grape cutting very seriously.

Assemble the Grinch kabobs starting with the green grape, leaving space on top of the green grape for a thin slice of banana, then strawberry ā€˜hatā€™ then a mini marshmallow or ā€˜jet puffed marshmallow bitsā€™, if you would like but not necessary. A white chocolate chip might even work too. Let me know in the comments if you try other tasty variations!

But is it sharp? Glad you asked.

The type of skewer you use is largely dependent on the ages and abilities of the audience youā€™re serving these to. Iā€™ve always used a toothpick, but we enjoy these together as a family so I am able to watch the kids closely. If you are sending them to school in a lunch box, or serving to a larger crowd and not sure how capable these little friends are, you could use a larger skewer or something more blunt and reusable like a plastic or silicone stirring stick.
