An extremely simple meal with rice, ground beef and Bachan sauce. Easy 3 ingredient Bachan beef and rice is dairy free, egg free and nut free.
Remember those days of just eating whatever you want from the fridge? No set dinner plans, no marinating or thawing meat. Just grab what you like and mow down.
Yeah those days are over. At least for families with kids, partners, and maybe even some elderly family members living with you. The addition of all these family members kind of makes it difficult to throw together odds and ends.
Yet day after day, we all have to eat dinner. Or something that resembles and satisfies like dinner.
—and I am not talking about ‘girl dinner’. Yes, I could eat cheese and crackers and a side of strawberries for dinner but that is not going to fly for the rest of my family.
This recipe for 3 ingredient bachan beef and rice is the perfect option for when you do not have the patience, time, energy or ability to cook dinner. Even though it turns out as a tasty meal, it requires very little time or effort from you. That is a big win in my books!
Tell me more on how easy it is!
This recipe is almost criminal to know because of how easy it is. This original Bachan Beef sauce is a a type of Japanese Barbecue sauce that compliments so many dishes. It is similar to the soy sauce-sugar sauce recipes that were popular years ago (korean beef and rice.)
My (current) favorite way of using it is to squirt it on a cooked pound of ground beef, and pour over steamed rice. Throw in a little fresh ginger while you are cooking the beef if you are feeling fancy. Top with some diced scallions and voila you have yourself a well rounded dinner.
3 ingredient meal, with options to upgrade
At a minimum you need the 3 ingredients: rice, ground beef and bachan sauce. This will give you a basic but still tasty dinner! The green onions and ginger are optional but tend to elevate the flavors.
Types of rice:
There are many varieties of rice and I think any could work, but my favorite is medium grain white rice.
Another good option is sushi rice. Both of these varieties are the kind that are ‘sticky’ and hold together well.
Instant rice, especially from a reputable brand would be great too. There are pre-packaged bowl style rice where you just need to heat and serve in its own bowl. No need to dirty other dishes. This is a seriously great hack for food allergy families who are traveling.
Rice cooking options:
-If you have a rice cooker, it is so easy to make a batch of rice.
-If you have a microwave, there are plenty of 2 minute microwaveable rice options.
-You could cook it in a pot too, but that is a bridge too far for me!
What to serve with Bachan beef and rice
I like to serve this with easy sides and vegetables that I can pull from the freezer like corn, or broccoli. Alternatively, cut up some cucumbers or carrots and serve on the side.
If you are really feeling ambitious (or guilty) to get some fruits and vegetables in everyone’s diet, you could also make a green smoothie (my family loves this!)
How to make easy 3 ingredient bachan beef and rice
Preparation:
-Cook rice of choice and keep warm. As mentioned above, medium grain white rice is my personal favorite as well as sushi rice.
-Grate fresh ginger, and set aside. Dice green onion/scallions finely and set aside.
Cook the beef:
-In a medium pan, add your ground beef and begin cooking over medium-high heat.
-Once the beef is about halfway cooked through, add in the grated ginger or ginger powder and mix to combine.
-Finish cooking the beef, then drain excess grease.
-Return to heat, and add in the Bachan Sauce, salt and pepper and mix well until incorporated.
-Serve over hot rice. As seen below, it is perfectly tasty and acceptable to serve like this!
-Option to sprinkle with the freshly diced green onions if you have any on hand.

Zojirushi Rice Cooker – can’t go wrong with this rice cooker, and there are thousands of reviews to back me up!
Bachan’s Original Sauce – a Japanese barbecue sauce, essentially like a lightly sweetened and savory elevated version of soy sauce. Option to buy at Costco too, but I know the stock varies by location and season.
