How to Make Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Have you ever wondered why those fancy chocolate covered strawberries are so expensive? Let’s be honest, they are decidedly NOT worth the high price tag. Lucky for you, I can show you how to make chocolate covered strawberries easily and quickly. There are some massive benefits to doing it at home, and some reasons why you should want to make your own at home too.

Is it easy to make chocolate covered strawberries at home?

100% YES.

They can be made in as little as 10 minutes

You can customize them how you want: dark chocolate with white chocolate drizzle; pure milk chocolate; ruby chocolate for a pink loving pal; blue chocolate for a baby shower
the options are endless! You could even add sprinkles —my kids love rainbow nonpareils.

You can choose your own type of chocolate, since most people have a milk/dark/semi sweet preference (imagine giving your spouse six strawberries for $29 only to remember they hate dark chocolate.) I just saved you $29 bucks, and probably a night of disappointment. You’re welcome.

Another benefit to this recipe: You can choose your own fresh strawberries. And please wash them before coating them in chocolate. The premade chocolate covered strawberries at the grocery store are often oozing and icky. Not appetizing.

The recipe is for chocolate covered strawberries that have a thick milk chocolate shell, perfectly hardened creating a wondrous snap as you bite into it. However, this is merely a guide. Pick your favorite chocolate(s) and taste as it melts to find your winning flavor combination.

How to achieve thick Chocolate Covered Strawberries:

Begin by washing the strawberries and drying them on a clean kitchen towel. If you prepare enough in advance you can just leave them on the towel to air dry. Don’t try and dip wet strawberries.

Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Fill a small pot about one quarter to one third way full, then place heat proof bowl on top of pot to create a double boiler (or use a small double boiler if you have one.) The water in the pot should NOT be touching the bowl— empty some out if it is.

Place chocolate chips in the bowl, and turn heat on to medium-low, so water is simmering. Melt chocolate, stirring occasionally. When the chocolate chips are fully melted, add in oil and stir until well blended. You will notice a significant improvement in shine after you add the oil.

Carefully remove from heat, bowl will be very hot so use caution.

While holding the stem of the strawberry, dip the berries in the chocolate. Try to do a dip and twist motion. Then place dipped strawberries on prepared parchment lined pan. After all berries are dipped, allow to cool on counter for 30 minutes, then place in refrigerator until ready to eat!

Special thanks to my husband for being a hand model demonstrating the dipping technique!

Things that helped in the kitchen for this recipe, and can help you too:

Treat boxes to carry and store your freshly made berries and don’t forget the cupcake liners to hold them! The “if you care” brand is my favorite for cupcakes, muffins, etc. (amazon)

Glass mixing bowl set –I used the small size in this recipe; a glass bowl works well so you can make sure the water isn’t actually touching the bowl. Stainless steel would work fine too, but obviously cannot see the steam or if the bowl is touching the water- (amazon)

Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips – my personal favorite for chocolate covered strawberries, mixed with a bit of semi sweet. Any of their chocolate chips would work great for this recipe

Dark chocolate chips from the brand Enjoy Life are a great allergen free option, as they do not contain nuts, eggs, dairy, gluten or soy!
