Before I go any farther, alternatively, you could make this dairy free sausage gravy with biscuits. My favorite biscuits are homemade and super simple (no complicated crumbling of the butter or cutting and shaping dough.) You could also use your safe version of canned biscuits from the store. Whatever you like!

Sausage gravy recipe

I have always loved eating sausage gravy served with biscuits. However about a year ago, I was inspired by our trip to Disney World to make the version of tots and sausage gravy from Friars Nook. It is literally tater tots and sausage gravy! All kinds of delicious. All kinds of simple.

Let’s take a quick look at the main ingredients and their substitutions:

Tater tots– are typically egg free, nut free, dairy free, and gluten free, but always double check the package label.

Milk– I use original soy milk, it is very creamy and has a slight underlying sweetness to it that dairy milk does not have. Of course, 2% or whole dairy milk would work fine if you don’t need the dairy free element.

Breakfast sausage– use your favorite ‘safe’ brand, in this recipe I use Jimmy Dean.

Flour– use regular all purpose flour or a 1:1 gluten free flour such as bob’s red mill

Too much for a small family? You can easily cut the recipe in half:

  • half package of tater tots
  • half pack (1/2lb) breakfast sausage
  • 1.5 tbsps flour
  • 1/2 cup coy milk plus 2 tbsps.
  • 1/4 cup water
  • dash of salt, pepper and fresh parsley (optional as preferred)

You could serve this family style as a breakfast casserole in one large dish. Egg free breakfast casseroles are hard to come by! Or serve it in cute individual ramekins as shown in this post.

I am going to show you the easiest way to make an egg free, dairy free breakfast recipe!

How to achieve the best Dairy Free Sausage Gravy with Tater Tots:

-Make the tater tots as per package instructions. For this recipe, I used a 32 oz bag of ore-ida ‘Golden Tater Tots seasoned shredded potatoes’ and cooked them in the air fryer until golden and crispy. If you do not have an air fryer, bake them in the oven as per package directions. Depending on air fryer basket size, you may have to cook the tots in batches.

Egg free breakfast

-In a Dutch oven or medium pan, cook a 1 lb package of breakfast sausage, I use Jimmy Dean ‘Premium Pork Sausage -regular’. Do not drain the fat. The oil is needed to mix with the flour to create a roux, which will be your thickening agent for your gravy.

Egg free breakfast ideas

-Once the ground breakfast sausage is just cooked, add in 3 tablespoons all purpose flour* you could also use gluten free 1:1 flour such as Bob’s red Mill. You can’t tell the difference!

Breakfast ideas without eggs

-Stir the flour into the breakfast sausage for about 1-2 minutes.

-Next while constantly stirring, slowly add your soy milk and water. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cooks and cools, so if you prefer more liquid gravy, add extra soy milk or water as needed.

-Taste and add salt and pepper if desired.

Dairy free breakfast

-Place cooked tater tots in the bottom of a ramekin or bowl or casserole dish, and top with the sausage gravy. Add a sprinkle of fresh parsley if you like!

Le Creuset dutch oven â€“ Amazon – Mine is old as sin, and still gets used weekly. If you can invest in one, I highly recommend it. If you’re lucky enough to live near a Williams and Sonoma outlet, you might find one for a good deal!

Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour – my preferred gluten free flour blend, great for crepes and pancakes too.
