This amazing egg-free breakfast food is just like the regular kind, with its golden brown exterior and soft custard-like interior; there is no compromising on taste or texture when making French toast with no eggs. The custardy goodness of each bite will leave you wondering why you ever needed eggs in the first place.
French toast with no eggs, you say? Let me explain: if you are in a predicament where some people in your house love eggs, while others hate them, or whether you have people in your house seriously allergic to eggs, you can make this French toast. Even if those options donβt apply to you, I strongly encourage you to try this recipe anyway.
How to describe French toast with no eggs?
It is similar to French toast in so many ways (minus the eggs obviously) that I had a hard time coming up with a name for it. Could it be faux French toast? Fake French toast? Eggless French toast? Egg-free French toast? They all kind of work, but to really drive home the point that it is a custardy toast made without eggs, I figured to keep it simple.
No matter what you call it, it is the best French toast I’ve ever had, in my humble opinion, and what really elevates it is to my sourdough sandwich bread for this recipe. You can thank me later π If you’re a cinnamon lover, I highly recommend using cinnamon in this recipe. If you’re the unlikely one who doesn’t enjoy a warm cinnamon breakfast food, leave it out.
This French toast with no eggs can stand alone on the breakfast table. It is sweet enough to eat on its own without any toppings. However, adding some toppings can really take it from simple French toast to a whole meal. My favorites for this recipe are powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh strawberries.
Eggless breakfast recipes are hard to come by, especially ones that actually taste good. Try this one out and impress everyone!
How to achieve fantastic French Toast with No Eggs:
Begin with a 4 cup square glass pyrex dish; I find this shape and size is perfect for my slices of bread to fit and get easily coated. Add the yogurt, oil and water and whisk well.
Next add your milk and cornstarch and continue to whisk until frothy/bubbly appearance.
finally add in the cinnamon, vanilla, and powdered sugar.
I went for an extra sweet style with 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar in this picture above. It was great and doesn’t require any extra sweet toppings, but I recommend sticking to the lesser amount in the recipe if trying for the first time. –especially if you like to drizzle on maple syrup.
Dip bread in milk/fake custard mixture and place in a pan cooking over medium heat, flip when the underside is golden brown to cook the opposite side.
After both sides are evenly cooked, place on a wire rack or serve immediately!
Things that helped in the kitchen for this recipe, and can help you too:
- Pyrex glass square dish – super versatile for packing lunches and leftovers, but also for making French toast! who knew!
- Mini-ish Oxo whisk – a silicone whisk is always a good utensil to have on hand so you don’t scratch precious pots and pans. I like the small size of this one.
- wire racks, from amazon, or Home Goods β I use this specific brand and size and it fits my 17.25 X 12.25 inch USA half sheet Pan which can be found on amazon or Home Goods!
- Measuring spoons – (Stainless steel set) mine get used multiple times a week, and have held up for YEARS
